De Sprundelaar had defeated Martijn Dragt (4-2), Joey ten Berge (5-2) and Arjan Konterman (2-0 in sets) to qualify for the final battle. He then met Baetens, who had eliminated defending champion Jelle Klaasen in the semifinals.
The first set went 3-0 to the Belgian, but then Van Peer picked up the momentum by winning six of the next seven legs and taking a 2-1 lead. In set four, Baetens took a 2-1 lead, but Van Peer came alongside with an 18-darter and a 12-darter and captured the title at the largest open tournament in the world.
